Reporting on Indigenous issues is still woeful but we will keep making noise and keep showing up

Tuesday commemorates 10 years since I based the @IndigenousX account on Twitter.

For many who aren’t accustomed to what we do, IndigenousX started as a rotating Twitter account the place a distinct Indigenous individual would take management of the account for the week and tweet about … nicely, no matter they needed to.

I had written an article for our anniversary a while in the past – reflecting, commemorating, celebrating the previous 10 years of IndigenousX.

This isn’t that article although.

I don’t really feel like celebrating proper now.

For all of the constructive modifications that we have now been part of during the last 10 years, this week I'm not feeling like we have now seen a lot constructive change in any respect.

Not when it's so painfully clear that there’s nonetheless some Australian media who, after a police officer was discovered not responsible on all costs for the killing of an Indigenous individual, seem pleased to presentthe cop because the hero and the sufferer of the taking pictures as a villain.

Our justice system put him on trial for his personal demise, and now our media are following swimsuit.

Most media organisations in Australia have Indigenous employees now, when a lot of them didn't 10 years in the past.

Most of them have reconciliation motion plans or now spell Indigenous with a capital ‘i’, or not use the time period “blacks” when writing about Indigenous affairs.

They nonetheless justify our deaths, although.

They nonetheless refuse to let our communities mourn.

They nonetheless fake that white objectivity in Indigenous affairs is a factor.

They nonetheless assume our humanity is a subject appropriate for debate amongst realized white consultants and random media commentators alike.

They nonetheless solely make use of Indigenous journalists when there’s a grant for it … then they’ll nonetheless ask that very same journo to jot down an article criticising all of the free cash Aboriginal individuals get.

I'd have cherished to have a good time IndigenousX’s anniversary – to have stopped for a second to breathe, to mirror, to possibly even pat myself on the again for the last decade that I poured my coronary heart and soul into.

As an alternative, I'll do what we all the time do: attempt to present consolation and assist the place we will, initially, after which present our platform and our sources to assist those that need to communicate reality, to create change, to say NO MORE.

I'll take the chance to say thanks, although.

Thanks to everybody who has been part of IndigenousX in any manner this previous decade.

IndigenousX was created for many completely different causes, however an important one was as a result of Australian media are so woeful relating to reporting on Indigenous points. Typically, in my opinion, maliciously so.

Whereas they justify our deaths, our communities mourn.

IndigenousX will maintain providing assist the place we will.

We are going to maintain making noise.

We are going to maintain offering a platform for our communities for so long as they need us to take action.

We are going to maintain exhibiting up.

And till we get justice, we are going to do our greatest to verify Australia doesn’t get peace.
