Manchester United have been hit by a Covid-19 outbreak, with their upcoming Premier League fixture against Brentford now under threat.
The Premier League have been informed that a ‘small number of players and staff’ have returned positive lateral flow tests, according to The Athletic.
Manchester United beat Norwich City 1-0 on Saturday and are due to face Brentford on Tuesday night.
But that fixture could now be postponed after the Old Trafford club was hit by a coronavirus outbreak.
United’s Premier League rivals Tottenham have had to postpone three fixtures due to an outbreak of Covid-19 in the Spurs squad.
Ralf Rangnick was due to oversee a group training session on Sunday but the outbreak meant it could not take place as planned.
Instead, the side were only able to complete individual non-contact outdoor sessions, with the individuals who tested positive sent home beforehand.
On Saturday, Championship high-flyers West Brom were hit by a major Covid-19 outbreak with four players testing positive ahead of their clash with Reading.
It is not the first time Manchester United have been effected by the virus, with Dean Henderson and Jesse Lingard both testing positive earlier in the season.
The highly contagious Omicron variant is threatening to wreck sporting events for the rest of the year, with virtually the whole of the 2020-21 season played behind closed doors.
From Monday, supporters will need to prove they have been double jabbed or have tested negative to be allowed into matches with a capacity of more than 4,000.
