Steven Gerrard fired a playful dig at Michael Owen over his ties with Manchester United following Aston Villa’s defeat to Liverpool on Saturday.
Gerrard was back at Anfield in the dugout and received a warm welcome from Liverpool’s supporters.
Mohamed Salah’s second-half penalty sealed the win for Jurgen Klopp’s side to keep them a point behind Premier League leaders.
After the match Owen, who was working as a pundit for Premier League Productions, asked Gerrard about the reception he received from Liverpool’s fans at Anfield.
‘I must admit I hated going back to play against Liverpool, what were your emotions like going back today and how did you feel about taking a team to your home?’ Owen asked.
But Gerrard replied: ‘If I’d played for Man U, I’d hate coming back too.’
Gerrard went on to say he will continue to support Liverpool but his ‘priority’ is to improve Aston Villa.
‘It is what it is, I’m on a journey,’ said the former Liverpool captain.
‘I’m privileged and honoured to take this position, it’s a fantastic club.
‘It’s still early days, we’re still trying to evolve the team and improve and get a lot of information across to the players.
‘I’ll always be a Liverpool fan, that’s a fact but my priorities are obviously Aston Villa and trying to improve this team and move us up the table.’
