Stormzy no doubt meets fans from all walks of life but he probably didn’t expect Sky Sports presenter Martin Brundle to be one of them.
The Vossi Bop rapper was among the A-list guests at the Formula One World Championship Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi on Sunday to watch Lewis Hamilton take on Max Verstappen.
Hours before Hamilton suffered a crushing defeat to his opponent, Stormzy, 28, spoke to Sky Sports’ Brundle about his hopes of the racer claiming the F1 title.
Viewers were thoroughly impressed as they watched the relaxed interview, with the sports presenter skillfully interweaving Stormzy’s album and song titles into the F1 questions.
At one point, Brundle asked: ‘Now, one of your albums Heavy Is The Head, you’ve got a couple of tracks on there, Own It, Crown – who’s going to be wearing the crown in two hours time?’
Stormzy was fully won over by the brilliant pun and laughed while telling the presenter: ‘That was a good one!’
Brundle either had someone telling him the right things in his earpiece or he is the coolest Stormzy fan around.
The wholesome interview then turned chaotic as former footballer Patrice Evra suddenly gatecrashed the segment.
When asked if he’d had any contact with Hamilton before the race, Stormzy replied: ‘No, no, no, I haven’t spoken to him, I wouldn’t even want to speak to him. I’m sure he needs to be in the zone, he needs to be focused.’
Patrice then appeared in shot and grabbed the microphone from Stormzy saying: ‘And he loved his game, I don’t care,’ with a hearty laugh.
Needless to say, the interview sparked a major reaction on Twitter with many highly amused by the chaos.
One viewer tweeted: ‘That Martin Brundle and Stormzy clip was very wholesome. Martin had clearly done his research. He was dropping album tracks into convo, not even singles.’
Another admitted: ‘Stormzy, Patrice Evra and Martin Brundle is not a combination I expected today.’
‘Martin Brundle listing Stormzy songs off was not what I was expecting today,’ another said.
Praising Brundle’s research, one quipped: ‘Brundle listing off Stormzy tracks. Sensational content.’
Another viewer wondered: ‘How does Martin Brundle know Stormzy’s album off by heart?’
‘STORMZY TRYING TO WALK OFF WITH MARTIN BRUNDLE’S MIC THIS IS SO CHAOTIC I LOVE IT,’ one weighed in.
Amused by Evra’s contribution, another tweeted: ‘Patrice Evra trying to muscle in on Stormzy F1 interview but Brundle not recognising him.’
Perhaps Brundle will get VIP tickets to Stormzy’s next tour, which will kick off in spring 2022.
