Jodie Whittaker is going to come up against a classic villain in the next Doctor Who special, as the teaser revealed the return of the Sea Devils.
Following Eve of the Daleks, the New Year special, fans were treated to a glimpse at the next episode, titled Legend of the Sea Devils.
The episode finds the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker), Yaz (Mandip Gill) and Dan (John Bishop) in 19th century China, where a small coastal village is under threat – from both the fearsome pirate queen Madame Ching (Crystal Yu) and a monstrous alien force which she unwittingly unleashes.
Will the Doctor, Yaz and Dan emerge from this swashbuckling battle with the Sea Devils to save the planet?
The teaser also introduces guest stars Arthur Lee as Ji-Hun and Marlowe Chan-Reeves as Ying Ki.
Set to air in spring, it will be the final episode before Jodie’s 13th Doctor regenerates and we’re introduced to the 14th Doctor.
The Sea Devils are amphibious Earth reptiles that had colonies around the world, and are best known for appearing in the classic TV episode The Sea Devils, during John Pertwee’s reign as the time lord.
They were a very technologically advanced species, with stockpiles of weapons and war machines.
But, considering they were introduced way back in 1972, it’s clear to see they’ve had quite the makeover for the modern age.
There’s no confirmed release date just yet – so watch this space!
Jodie’s final three episodes have kicked off, with the Doctor coming face-to-face with the most terrifying enemy, the Daleks in the New Year special.
The second special airs in spring and Jodie’s final feature-length special, in where the Thirteenth Doctor will regenerate, will transmit in autumn 2022 as part of the BBC’s Centenary celebrations.
As for who will take over in the role of the Doctor, the jury is still very much out, but Jodie has made it clear that she’s backing It’s A Sin star Lydia West.
