Astronaut community tweets out its approval of Jeremy Hansen's moon mission

Reaction to the news that Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen had been named to the crew of the upcoming Artemis 2 mission to the moon was swift and joyous within the space community.

“The next humans going to the moon,” retired astronaut and former space station commander Chris Hadfield tweeted over an image of Hansen and his three U.S. crewmates, who were named on Monday morning during an event in Houston. “What a crew!”

Dave Williams, another retired astronaut who flew on the space shuttle in 1998 and again in 2007, added: “Thrilled to see Reid Wiseman, Vic Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen assigned to the Artemis 2 mission!! Congratulations to an outstanding crew on an exciting mission. From the Apollo generation to the Artemis generation, these missions and crews are a course of inspiration.”

Fellow astronaut Jennifer Sidey-Gibbons tweeted: “Enormously proud to see my colleague and friend selected to represent #Canada on #Artemis II. What an outstanding opportunity for our corps, space sector, and country. Ad astra!”

Sidey-Gibbons, as one of four active astronauts with the Canadian Space Agency, was on the short list for the Artemis 2 mission, which is slated to lift off as early as next year for an orbital journey around Earth’s satellite. She may still be named to a future mission, perhaps even a lunar landing.

Even the Orion crew capsule, which will carry the astronauts to the moon and back, got into the act, tweeting out the names of the astronauts and adding: “We’re you’re ride to the #Moon!”
