A man has been arrested and bomb disposal experts were called to a street in Teesside today, with neighbours evacuated from their homes.
Armed police were called to Hartington Road in Stockton at around 9.42am. The street was blocked off and officers flooded the scene.
Police said a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article. He remains in custody.
Later, a bomb disposal team arrived at the scene and people living in the street were asked to leave their homes.
A spokesperson for the police said officers were concerned about ‘an item in the property’.
During the course of the afternoon officers wearing hazmat suits could be seen working inside a property on the street.

In a statement, Cleveland Police said: ‘Officers attended Hartington Road at 9.42am this morning.
‘A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article and remains in custody.
‘Police have remained at the scene due to concerns about an item in a property which – as a precaution – will now be assessed.
‘A number of people in close proximity have been asked to leave their properties, again as a precaution.
‘Officers have spoken to all those affected.
‘This is an ongoing matter which is being carefully managed and we’d encourage people to follow any advice they were given by officers at the scene.’
