People were stopped in their tracks when the familiar chimes of ice cream vans sounded through the streets of south London.

The fleet of 10 vendors escorted a hearse, covered in an elegant flower arrangement, as it passed through Peckham and Lewisham.

A heartwarming video of the convoy, shared by Louisa Davies earlier today, has touched the hearts of people across the country.

In a post on Twitter, Ms Davies wrote: ‘Just witnessed an ice cream man’s funeral and all the ice cream vans came and followed in solidarity. I AM SOBBING’.

It is believed the colourful ice-cream vans were paying a tribute to one of their colleagues who had passed away.

According to replies to the clip, this is a ‘majestic’ tradition in the ice cream seller community.

Ms Davies’ video has since received more than 110,000 likes, 14,700 retweets and hundreds of touching comments from people paying their respects.

One Londoner, Dashiell Silva even said the procession was ‘more powerful than a military flyover at a funeral for a head of state’.

He added: ‘My family’s business was in ice cream distribution. This is really hitting me hard.’

Another Twitter user said: ‘OMG I heard this from Peckham and was like ‘what is that phantom ice cream van sound?’

‘I’m so glad the mystery is solved. It’s doing quite the rounds of South London Twitter.’
