In a recent interview, Ben, 49, recalled how he began drinking to cope with his marriage breakdown.

He and Garner, also 49, share three children – Violet, 16, Seraphina, 12, and Samuel, nine – and announced their split in 2015 after almost 10 years of marriage. Their divorce was finalised in 2018.

Ben’s interview has sparked criticism with many pointing out that his battle with addiction preceded his marriage to Garner, through his own admission.

Piers, 56, took particular issue with Ben’s unsavoury comments about his former marriage, as the presenter has experienced divorce himself.

In his latest Daily Mail column, the former Good Morning Britain presenter wrote: ‘I say this as someone who’s been through a divorce myself and who has never said a bad word in public about my ex, and never will.

‘Partly out of respect for her – we’ve remained good friends, and she’s never dissed me in public either – and partly because I never want our three sons to hear me talk badly about their mother.

‘So, what the hell was Ben Affleck thinking when he sat down with Howard Stern and decided to humiliate Jennifer Garner in the unkindest possible manner?’

Piers described Ben’s Howard Stern interview as a ‘self-indulgent orgy of deeply personal revelation’. The broadcaster said it was ‘disingenuous as it’s cruelly unfair’ to describe being ‘trapped’ with the mother of his children, considering she has seemingly ‘done everything she can to help and protect him’.

The TV star continued: ‘Even by Hollywood standards, this is astonishingly selfish and self-centered conduct, but hardly surprising from a supremely narcissistic 49-year-old man who recently inked a ludicrous gigantic tattoo of a rising phoenix all over his back in a clear sign that he’s having a pitiful mid-life crisis.

‘It’s also a sign that Ben Affleck’s had one great love of his life and it’s neither of the Jennifers… It’s himself.’

In his candid chat with Stern, the Pearl Harbor actor said that, had he and Garner not split up, they would have likely ‘been at each other’s throats,’ admitting: ‘I probably would still be drinking.’

Ben also revealed that he hesitated rekindling his romance with ex Jennifer Lopez to protect his children from the attention that comes with being in a high-profile relationship.
