Munich: The Edge of War review – handsome if muted take on Robert Harris’s spy thriller

Plush workplaces, candlelit speakeasies and tasteful walled gardens; such cosy confines really feel constructed for lovers. In Christian Schwochow’s good-looking spy thriller, they're the clandestine assembly factors for undercover brokers. Set in 1938, within the run-up to the second world battle, and based mostly on Robert Harris’s 2017 historic novel, it stars a quietly dignified Jeremy Irons as prime minister Neville Chamberlain as he prepares to satisfy with Adolf Hitler (Ulrich Matthes) to debate what would turn out to be the ill-fated Munich settlement.

Advising, or quite, advising in opposition to, is George MacKay’s sombre political aide Hugh Legat, who in flip is fed info by former college pal Paul von Hartman (Jannis Niewöhner), now a German diplomat. MacKay is muted; his character is teased for his reserve, a top quality he shares with the movie. Niewöhner offers the sparkier efficiency, as a passionate German nationalist whose loyalty has flipped.
