Dry January is a great thing to do, sure.

But how about a wet January, too?

To clear out the cobwebs and bring some fun to a time that can be a bit bleak, one sex expert recommends an update on your advent calendar.

Rather than opening each day with a tiny bit of chocolate, how about committing to a different pleasure?

By that we of course mean masturbating every single day in January, as suggested by sexologist Ness Cooper.

Ness reckons that a month of masturbation could help to lighten the load of the usual January blues.

‘I think what’s most important is to focus on spending time with yourself and get to know your body,’ says Ness.

‘If you’re not someone who masturbates every day, start off using a combination of mindfulness and basic touch.

‘Get yourself in a relaxed state and become aware of the sensations going through your body.

‘Try not to focus on your body being sexual at first and once you’re aware of touch and how things feel you will become more relaxed into it and become more sexually aware.

‘Think of it as a form of solo foreplay. People always think of foreplay as a couple’s activity but we should be doing it by ourselves as well.’

The sexpert notes that this daily practice isn’t always about orgasm, but just spending some time enjoying whatever feels good.

Ahead, she shares her top tips for self-love in the month ahead…

Don’t forget the mental stimulation

Don’t just dive straight in with your vibrator – get your mind in the mood first.

You might want to immerse yourself in an imagined fantasy, or try porn.

‘Lots of women find audio porn very helpful, hearing the noises and imagining the situation to get them in the mood,’ says Ness.

‘Erotic fiction is also hugely popular, as is regular porn.

‘But what’s really important is to focus your mind on the situation you’re in and allow yourself to truly switch off and concentrate on you.

‘It could be a particular scenario that has happened or you wish would happen, or a fantasy that turns you on.’

Find the right position

You can’t properly enjoy masturbation if you’re not fully comfortable.

‘Finding the right position for you is really crucial to enjoying touch,’ Ness explains.

‘Some women may find they are more sensitive if they lay on their front with their legs straight, while others may find squatting positions better for accessing the G spot.

‘It’s important to remember that everybody is different and may mean that certain nerves get aggravated more.

‘For instance, they can go numb, like you do when you get a dead arm or leg.

‘Some women find that in a lunge position it can affect a nerve that goes into the vagina and can result in a less sensitive response to stimulation.’

Don’t stress out if orgasm doesn’t happen

Ness says: ‘There’s so much more to sex and masturbation than just orgasms.

‘I know there are people who can’t orgasm due to physical reasons and they can still later develop methods of achieving an orgasm-like sensation by either finding a new erogenous zone on their body or diving deeper into their mind.

‘Lots of people do it with breathing techniques and tantra.’

Experiment with different sensations

‘Experiment with sensations, from different types where you vary speed and pressure, to even adding in orgasm balm and warming lubricants,’ suggests Ness.

‘Orgasm balm and lubricants can wake up nerve endings in exciting and different ways that can make your masturbation session feel more adventurous and exciting.’

Get a toy involved

Save your wrists from strain and invest in a toy.

A vibrator can be an easy way to upgrade your pleasure and bring you to orgasm.
