The Maori actor died at his residence in New Zealand on Sunday following an extended battle with kidney illness.

Smith’s son Poumau Papali’i-Smith revealed that his father had been ‘sick for a very long time’.

Talking to native publication Stuff, Poumau mentioned: ‘For the final seven years he’d been on dialysis which took its toll on him over time. Inside the final two years he was additionally recognized with dementia.

‘We began doing dialysis at residence however over the previous couple of weeks he suffered an an infection which he fought for the final 4 weeks.’
