NSW prison officer pleads not guilty over shooting death of Aboriginal inmate who tried to escape

A jail officer has pleaded not responsible to the manslaughter of an Aboriginal inmate who was shot lifeless whereas attempting to flee from a northern New South Wales hospital.

The accused, known as Officer A, was arraigned within the state’s supreme courtroom on Friday, when he pleaded not responsible to unlawfully killing Dwayne Johnstone.

Justice Robert Allan Hulme, who was advised the case was “tough and novel”, set the trial down for 10 October. It’s estimated to run for 3 weeks.

The 43-year-old Wiradjuri man died after being shot at Lismore base hospital on 15 March 2019.
