‘The Kazakh children’s uniforms look like the Red Army’ – Frédéric Noy’s best phone picture

Shooting with an iPhone, says French photographer Frédéric Noy, is like “delicate psychotherapy. Generally, you get caught. Taking a couple of footage with an iPhone is sort of a liberation. A reset, a second of reflection. You see issues otherwise.”

Noy arrived in Nur-Sultan, the capital of Kazakhstan, mid-pandemic, after a few years in Africa, the place he had documented the day by day lives of persecuted LGBTQ+ Ugandans; he had received World Press Picture and Visa d’Or awards for his work on the environmental catastrophe in Lake Victoria. “I wished to go someplace as distant and as completely different as potential,” he says. “Kazakhstan was the final nation to depart the USSR, and it’s nonetheless developing its identification.
