Scott Morrison caves in to co-funding Queensland flood resilience package after fierce criticism

The prime minister, Scott Morrison, says the commonwealth will co-fund a $741m pure catastrophe resilience package deal for flood-prone Queensland communities – simply a day after rejecting the request and claiming it was not his authorities’s duty.

Morrison made the about-face throughout an interview with Brisbane radio station 4BC on Thursday morning.

It adopted fierce criticism of the Morrison authorities on Wednesday, together with from the Insurance coverage Council of Australia, which mentioned the federal authorities couldn't “wash its palms” of duty.

The Queensland premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, wrote to Morrison on 19 March asking to go halves within the package deal, designed to pay for retrofitting, home elevating or the voluntary buyback of flood-damaged properties.

Morrison wrote to Palaszczuk on Tuesday night time rejecting the request. He mentioned in his letter that the measures had been “exterior the scope” of federal catastrophe restoration applications and the duty of state and native governments.

When requested in regards to the state of affairs on Thursday morning, Morrison mentioned the federal authorities had already dedicated extra money to flood restoration than the Queensland authorities and that the requests made “go effectively past” others for “floods of this nature”.

He mentioned the federal authorities would now pay for half the resilience package deal.

“If Queensland desires to play politics with floods earlier than an election, that’s as much as them,” Morrison mentioned.

“I don’t wish to play politics with this, I simply wish to be sure individuals get the assistance they want.

“Sure, we are going to present that help. Sure, it's past the scope of what's usually achieved.”

At a press convention within the flood-hit suburb of Goodna, Queensland’s treasurer and performing premier, Cameron Dick, mentioned it was “regrettable that it took so lengthy for the prime minister to behave”.

“It took him three weeks to think about our proposal. In 36 hours, after the prime minister mentioned no, he’s now mentioned sure,” Dick mentioned.

“This shouldn't be the matter of whether or not there’s an election or not, this ought to be a matter of presidency enterprise.”

Dick labelled as “nonsense” a declare from the prime minister that extra transparency was wanted to make sure funds had been being made.

“The Queensland Reconstruction Authority is accountable … for all resilience funds,” Dick mentioned.

“Presently, [the prime minister has] two advisers on the board ... he is aware of precisely what we do with the cash.”

Morrison instructed 4BC the federal authorities would connect “circumstances” to the fee that demanded Queensland be “clear with the funds being made … I need them to report back to the general public”.

He claimed the Queensland authorities was sitting on $52m supplied for earlier catastrophe restoration, a declare Guardian Australia is in search of to confirm.

“As extreme rain and flooding continues to impression the east coast, the failure of the federal authorities to match Queensland’s funding in measures to enhance family and group protections towards excessive climate is disappointing and short-sighted,” the ICA’s chief government, Andrew Corridor, mentioned.

“If Australia is to get severe about bettering our resilience to flood, bushfire and cyclone, all ranges of presidency should contribute.

“Australians – significantly these nonetheless impacted by the continuing rain and flooding – need governments to return collectively to supply higher protections towards worsening excessive climate, not wash their palms of duty.”
