A 14-year-old tiger has died at a zoo after contracting the coronavirus, which precipitated him to develop pneumonia.

Jupiter the Amur tiger died on Sunday on the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio.

The tiger first started showing unwell on June 22, when he was not fascinated about consuming and didn't wish to stand, transfer or work together with keepers, the zoo shared on Fb on Wednesday.

‘When this continued into the subsequent day, Jupiter was anesthetized for examination and remedy. Preliminary exams recommended an an infection, and remedy was began,’ wrote the zoo. ‘Sadly, Jupiter didn't enhance with this remedy and remained reluctant to maneuver and eat.’

The subsequent day, Jupiter underwent extra remedies and testing.

‘Though he appeared secure, Jupiter handed away in a single day,’ the zoo acknowledged.

Jupiter, who was present process long-term remedy for underlying continual sicknesses, is the primary animal on the zoo to die of Covid-19.

‘As a precautionary measure, we're requiring employees working with cats, nice apes and mustelids (i.e., otters, wolverines) to put on masks when inside six toes of those animals,’ the zoo acknowledged. ‘These animals are extra inclined to contracting Covid-19.’

Jupiter was born at Moscow Zoo in July 2007, spent a while on the Zoo Dvur Kralove within the Czech Republic and arrived on the Columbus zoo in March 2015.

He sired 9 cubs, six of which had been born in Columbus. Jupiter was pleasant towards the feminine tigers Mara and Natasha.

‘Jupiter’s care crew remembers him as a giant and spectacular tiger who beloved fish, sleeping within the habitat’s cave, taking part in with cardboard packing containers, and interacting with one other favourite merchandise—a 75-pound firehouse “plus signal” that was heavy for keepers to maneuver,’ the zoo acknowledged, ‘However one thing he carried round prefer it weighed nothing.’

Jupiter is the newest massive cat to die of Covid-19. In June 2021, a nine-year-old lion died from the coronavirus after an outbreak at Vandalur Zoo in India.
