Rosen addresses Frank straight within the poem writing, “you compressed a lot life into that loft”, however that “every time we learn, we battle to get pleasure from / your love of life whereas figuring out the way it ended”.

Rosen mentioned: “I’ve acquired an unresolved dilemma within the poem, which is that within the diary you’re studying an individual who's so alive and so filled with hope and life’s particulars and issues from an adolescent’s perspective, but it surely’s virtually inconceivable to learn it with out considering of her horrible destiny. So there may be an terrible paradox between the residing spirit of the diary and the data that you've.

“[The poem] makes an area for the reader to dwell on that paradox, which is in its personal manner fairly painful. You chuckle rather a lot with Anne Frank, and also you suppose she’s having enjoyable on the neighbours’ expense, and you then simply all of the sudden have this simultaneous sense of being appalled by the horrible finish.

“And that’s why it ends on the phrase ‘ended’.”

Frank obtained a clean diary for her thirteenth birthday on 12 June 1942, and wrote in it whereas she and her household have been in hiding in a secret annexe above her father Otto’s office in Amsterdam.

After the household have been found by the Nazis, Otto’s secretary Miep Gies discovered the diary within the annexe. When the struggle was over Gies gave it to Otto, the one member of the household to outlive the Holocaust, and he determined to publish it, as Anne had wished. When translated from Dutch to English, the guide’s title grew to become The Diary of a Younger Lady.

The poem was commissioned by the Anne Frank Belief, an schooling charity that teaches younger individuals to problem prejudice.

Rosen, who's a longtime supporter of the belief, is at present professor of kids’s literature at Goldsmiths, College of London. He served as kids’s laureate from 2007 to 2009.

In addition to much-loved kids’s poems and the basic image guide We’re Happening a Bear Hunt, his books embrace The Lacking: The True Story of My Household in World Battle II, which was launched in 2020 and traced members of the family who died within the Holocaust.

Sonnet for Anne Frank by Michael Rosen

Because you took us into that attic area
no room underneath the eaves has been the identical.
Wherever we go – our houses or others’ –
at any time when we dip and duck underneath beams
you might be within the shadows, writing pages
laughing, crying, consuming, daring to like
imagining a greater world than yours.
The way you wrote leads us to suppose we all know you.

You compressed a lot life into that loft
which we pore over and love you for it
but the true world – not the one you imagined –
didn’t permit you to reside and write any extra.
Every time we learn, we battle to get pleasure from
your love of life whereas figuring out the way it ended.
