NHL Best Bets March 8th: Petey power

It was a thanks to Owen Tippett’s nine shots on goal and Brandon Montour’s three. Brent Burns couldn’t come through with a power play point against Montreal.

Recap: 2-1, +1 unit

*Odds as of 11 a.m. ET*

Blackhawks-Red Wings Under 5.5 Goals (+129, Sports Interaction) Wager: 1 unit to win 1.29 units

Usually, you would expect two bad teams to score many goals against each other, but tonight I’m going against the grain and taking the under.

Over their last 10 games, the Red Wings have scored 23 goals, while the Blackhawks have netted just 29.

It also helps that Detroit’s projected starting goalie Ville Husso has been in decent form lately, putting up a .911 SV%.

Neither team is good defensively, but I’ll bet that their lack of finishing is why this one stays a low-scoring affair.

Vancouver Canucks -1.5 (+115, BetMGM) Wager: 1 unit to win 1.15 units

Similar to the Chicago-Detroit game, you’ve got two bottom-feeding teams squaring off in Vancouver tonight. The Ducks are coming off a 5-2 loss in Seattle, while the Canucks stunned the Maple Leafs on Saturday night with a big third period to get the win and then went on to beat Nashville in a shootout on Monday.

As bad as Vancouver has been this year, I’m still going to run with them for a few reasons.

First off, their goal differential is 66 goals better than Anaheim’s. Secondly, they still have star calibre players in Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes. Thirdly, Thatcher Demko has returned from injury and looked very good in goal, putting up a .937 SV% in three games.

In their lone meeting earlier this year, Vancouver won a barn burner, 8-5.

Elias Pettersson over 1.5 Points (+120, DraftKings) Wager: 1 unit to win 1.2 units

If I’m going to take the Canucks to win by two or more goals, I’m also expecting Elias Pettersson to be a big reason why. Since Bo Horvat was dealt to Long Island, Petterson has stepped up his game with 21 points in 14 games.

As I’ve spoken about above, the Ducks are one of the worst teams in the league and have a -99 goal differential.

In that previous 8-5 win by Vancouver on November 3rd, Pettersson scored once and added four assists. While it may be hard to expect that type of performance again, it’s definitely on the table in this matchup.
