To determine when spring is, some of us look to the calendar, others perhaps a groundhog, I look to the Starbucks menu. Spring officially kicks off in our hemisphere on March 20, 2023, but Starbucks is giving us a taste as of March 7.

I headed to the Starbucks offices in Toronto to taste the two new spring beverages, the Iced Strawberry Oat Matcha Tea Latte and Cinnamon Caramel Cream Cold Brew. The good news, they taste better on the tongue than rolling off the tongue. Though the drinks are a mouthful to say, they offer new and exciting flavours.

The strawberry matcha latte is only offered in Canada and only for the season. The cinnamon cold brew is new to the menu and is here to stay.

At the Starbucks offices, I received a quick lesson on how to make the Iced Strawberry Oat Matcha Tea Latte. It’s not a coincidence that Starbucks’ drinks are consistent among locations; the instructions are specific. Starbucks uses key ingredients, so replicating their drinks is difficult. However, we can get close. If you’re looking to get your barista on at home, here are the approximate steps on how to make your own iced strawberry matcha drink. You can whip one up as quickly as you can say “Iced Strawberry Oat Matcha Tea Latte.”

How to make a drink like the Iced Strawberry Oat Matcha Tea Latte

Ingredients:

Instructions:

    1. Pour the water into the shaker
    2. Pour the oat milk into the shaker
    3. Add four pumps of the strawberry syrup
    4. Scoop in 1 heaping spoonful of dried strawberries
    5. Scoop in the matcha powder
    6. Add in the ice
    7. Close shaker
    8. Shake 10 times (yes, you can count your barista’s shakes when you order this drink)
    9. Pour into cup, maybe a Starbucks reusable cold cup
    10. Write your wrong name on cup (an outdated joke)

Enjoy the taste of exclusive-Canadian spring.
