Some Taylor Swift fans are walking a street made famous by the artist for the last time, leaving bouquets by the door of her old apartment. Some are even throwing up.
Why?
To mourn her relationship with actor Joe Alwyn after the couple reportedly split after six years together.
The “Midnights” artist, 33, and the “Conversations With Friends” star, 32, broke up a few weeks ago, Entertainment Tonight reported Saturday. Without citing any sources, ET also noted that the breakup “was not dramatic” and that “the relationship had just run its course.”
Neither Swift nor Alwyn have commented publicly on the split, but for some Swifties — who have a firm grip on all things Taylor and have an intense relationship with the artist — the news was devastating.
So much so that some fans ventured to her old residence on Cornelia Street in New York City to pay their respects to the artist’s reportedly failed relationship — the location that inspired her song “Cornelia Street,” which details how if her relationship ended, she’d never be able to step foot on the street again.
According to Chart Data, the song earned its biggest streaming day on Spotify since 2019.
Vulture reported some people were so distraught they threw up after learning of the split, while some locals said they were tired of kids from New Jersey coming to Cornelia Street with their parents to film videos outside Swift’s old apartment building.
“There’s always a group there. They’re crazy. They’re insane. They come in and they dance; it’s like a freak show. It’s so insipid and shallow,” one local resident said.
Swift hasn’t lived in that apartment for years, but fans are documenting their pilgrimages on TikTok, including one fan who banged on the doors of the unit and said they were preparing to never walk the street again, Swift’s song playing in the background.
Another user filmed someone kneeling in front of the door after placing flowers nearby, saying they “can not [sic] believe people are actually mourning like this.”
One said they felt like a “villain” for snatching a bouquet left in front of the door, saying Swift doesn’t need the flowers because she’s “single, not dead.”
Single, not dead, indeed, but for some fans, the split is “the kind of heartbreak time could never mend,” in the words of Swift herself.
