Senators defenceman Jake Sanderson passed over in voting for Calder Trophy finalists

Jake Sanderson was the Ottawa Senators’ top rookie, but his contributions weren’t enough to attract attention from the voters for the NHL awards.

The league announced the three finalists for the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year Wednesday night and Sanderson wasn’t among them.

While the 20-year-old Sanderson certainly caught the attention of the local voters in Ottawa, Matty Beniers of the Seattle Kraken, Owen Power of the Buffalo Sabres and Stuart Skinner of the Edmonton Oilers were named the three finalists.

Beniers finished with 24 goals and 55 points in 80 games this season while Power, a blueliner, had four goals and 35 points in 79 games. Skinner led all rookie goaltenders with 29 wins.

It’s interesting to note no member of the Oilers has ever been named the NHL’s rookie of the year.

Voting is done by members of the media before the playoffs get underway and the winners will be announced at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on June 26 before the NHL draft.
