Academics worry the ‘atrocious mistake’ may injury college students’ outcomes

A number one examination board has been slammed after a GCSE geography paper wrongly named international locations on a map of Africa.

One enraged trainer stated that his pupils had been left confused after the map wrongly labelled Gabon because the Republic of the Congo in a query about international locations on the continent that produce oil.

He stated he feared the ‘atrocious mistake’ may injury college students’ outcomes.

‘Hundreds of children throughout England and Wales sat that,’ he advised Mailonline.

‘There have been plenty of complaints to the examination board. It’s an atrocious mistake from an examination physique setting GCSE papers.

‘There have been college students who had been confused by it and had been thrown by it. It made it tougher to reply the query.’

He added that in his 10 years as a Geography trainer he had by no means seen something ‘as unhealthy as this’.

Different academics hit out on the examination board on Twitter.

One head of division, who can be an A-level examiner, posted an image of the map on Twitter and stated: ‘When your geography examination board can’t even produce an correct map of Africa! An apology to the folks of Gabon and Republic of the Congo is urgently wanted. Really appalling.’

One other geography trainer, Elizabeth Saunders, wrote: ‘That is completely disgraceful.’

Parson Edexecel, which is  the one privately owned examination board within the UK, boasts of being ‘the world’s main studying firm’ and provides tutorial and vocational qualifications in faculties, faculties and work locations.

In a response to the publish, Pearson Geography replied: ‘Thanks in your suggestions.

‘We apologise for the unintentional error within the labelling of a map in our GCSE geography paper and any confusion brought on.

‘We'll guarantee college students will not be impacted by awarding marks for references to both nation.’
